LP performs Into The Wild from The GRAMMYs on Youtube
Pop/rock singer/songwriter LP recently visited The Recording Academy’s headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., to participate in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview and perform a brief acoustic set. LP discussed the benefits of being a singer and songwriter, her upcoming studio album and collaborating with GRAMMY-winning songwriter Billy Steinberg, among other topics. LP performed “Into The Wild,” “Someday” and a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.”
“I don’t think a good singer or a great singer is either of those things without a great song,” said LP. “I’m blessed to be able to express the song how I want. … It’s very fulfilling to be the person [who] communicates the song to actual people.”
Born Laura Pergolizzi, LP cites artists such as Jeff Buckley, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, and Robert Plant as influences. She began her music career as the frontwoman for a New York-based band Lionfish during the late ’90s. After attracting the interest of producer/songwriter and Cracker frontman David Lowery during a live performance, she appeared on the alternative rock band’s 1998 album Gentleman’s Blues and subsequently toured with the group. In 2001 LP released her debut solo album, Heart-Shaped Scar, and followed with her sophomore effort, Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol, in 2004. Aside from her solo career, LP has collaborated with other artists, penning or co-penning songs with Christina Aguilera, the Backstreet Boys and Rihanna, among others.
After signing a deal with Warner Bros. Records, in April 2012 LP released Into The Wild: Live At EastWest Studios, a live EP/DVD featuring the single “Into The Wild.” The song was recently featured in a commercial for Citibank. LP is currently working on her major label debut, which will be produced by GRAMMY winner Rob Cavallo.
When times were rough
You used me up
Wasted love on you
Did you ever really see?
Was it ever really me?
Why’d you keep me in a cage,
you should’ve set me free
‘Cause every single time you lie the light comes searing through my pride
And if you had a heart now I know it wasn’t mine
Wasted love
Wasted love
Wasted all my time and love on you
When times were rough
You used me up
Wasted love on you
All along I knew something was not right
But I was hoping I could change your mind
All along no matter how I tried and tried
You kept taking, taking, taking
every breath I had inside
